The Biral VPF Visibility and Present Weather sensors provide outstanding levels of accuracy and performance. The first sensors to use forward scatter in combination with an infra-red LED light source, they remain at the forefront of visibility and present weather measurement and are the sensor of choice in extreme environments.

The SWS range of present weather sensors based on the successful VPF technology have been designed for use by wind energy producers and for general meteorological data collection.

In 2014, Biral developed a unique standalone lightning detector called the BTD-300, based upon the changes in atmospheric electrostatic field.

In 2016, Biral launched the RWS-20 Road Weather Sensor, based on the SWS the sensor is designed for use in road applications where accurate and reliable visibility measurements are required. The forward scatter measurement principle and unique design ensure the output is both accurate and reliable in all weather conditions and will not be influenced by local light sources, even flashing signs.

RWS-20 Road Weather Sensor

The RWS-20 Road Weather Sensor is designed for use in road applications where accurate and reliable visibility measurements are required. The forward scatter measurement principle and unique design ensure the output is both accurate and reliable in all weather conditions and will not be influenced by local light sources, even flashing signs.

The 10m to 7.5km measurement range is optimal for use in road applications. Heating of the optical windows prevents misting and the optional sensor hood heating can be provided, allowing use in the harshest of conditions. Both optical windows are monitored for contamination and the visibility output is automatically compensated to reduce maintenance requirements.

SWS-250 Visibility & Present Weather Sensor

The SWS-250 is optimised for use in applications where both visibility and extended present and past weather information is required.

The sensor measures: visibility (MOR, EXCO and TEXCO), fog, haze, drizzle, snow, hail and other non-frozen precipitation according to WMO table 4680. METAR coded outputs are also provided.

For ultimate visibility performance the visual range extends to 75km allowing use in meteorological observation networks and research applications.

The enhanced present weather information from the SWS-250 is due to the backscatter receiver which allows detailed precipitation analysis and the use of algorithms developed for Biral’s flagship VPF-750 present weather sensor.

VPF-730 Visibility & Present Weather Sensor

Every aspect of the sensor’s design is focussed on measurement accuracy, reliability and durability. The open design of the sensor head allows the free passage of air for greater measurement accuracy whilst the hard coat anodised dip brazed construction gives superb corrosion resistance.

The unique backscatter receiver gives the VPF-730 unparalleled abilities in distinguishing frozen from liquid precipitation. Present weather conditions are reported using WMO table 4680 codes to simplify system integration and compliance.

The VPF-730 can be AC mains or low voltage DC powered and hood heaters are available for use in areas prone to snow.

Clima Type US Weather Station

The Clima Type US range of weather sensors are compact and simple to mount and are suited for many applications including traffic control and environmental control systems. All models feature wind speed and direction measurement using a two axis ultrasonic anemometer, options for additional parameter measurement include precipitation, brightness, temperature, humidity and pressure.

Laser Precipitation Monitor

The state-of-the-art Laser Precipitation Monitor (LPM) measures the amount, intensity and type of precipitation with great accuracy. The LPM is capable of measuring particles down to 0.16 mm diameter and can provide drop size distributions with 400 classes.

The data output is available in SYNOP, METAR, NWS, and in 4678 and 4680 WMO code. The system calculates intensity, volume (as water equivalent) and the spectrum of precipitation (diameter and velocity), the reduction to visibility in precipitation (MOR) and the radar reflectivity (Z). The LPM uses reliable laser-optics to detect and discriminate different kinds of precipitation including: drizzle (DZ), freezing drizzle (FZDZ), rain (RA), freezing rain (FZRA), hail (GR), snow (SN), snow grains (SG), ice needles (IC), soft hail (GS), ice grains (PL)

First Class Wind Speed Transmitter

High sensitivity mechanical cup anemometer designed for the measurement of the horizontal component of the wind speed for site evaluation and the measurement of capacity characteristics of wind power systems as well as meteorological applications and environmental measurements.

Ideal for site assessment and power performance of Wind Turbine Generators

The Advanced First Class sensor is Class A, B and S accredited acc. IEC 61400-12-1 for site assessment and power performance of Wind Turbine Generators.

The sensor characteristics are optimised for dynamic behaviour, even in high turbulence intensities with minimal over-speeding and a low starting value. The sensor is available in a number of variants including digital and analogue outputs. Heated versions are available for use in regions prone to freezing.

First Class Wind Direction Transmitter

The First Class wind direction vanes are designed for the acquisition of the horizontal component of the wind direction and have the best accuracy of any vane system with an excellent response in turbulent flows. They are constructed of aluminium for durability and are available in heated and unheated versions.

The sensor is available in a number of variants including digital and analogue outputs. Heated versions are available for use in regions prone to freezing.
